Touching and inspirational

I would recommend that you read the book “The Island of Sea Women” by Lisa See before visiting the museum. I felt an emotional connection to the museum, the observatory and the grounds around the area, primarily because I had some background knowledge. The museum is well laid out and interesting. Do take the time to watch the video on the main floor before going through the exhibits. If you are there around 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. you may be able to see the women divers from the observatory on the 3rd floor. Getting there: we were on a cruise ship and took a taxi from the ship terminal in Jeju City. It took about an hour and was a very scenic drive. Our taxi driver gave us an hour to tour the museum and grounds and then dropped us off by the main market area in downtown Jeju City. It was under $100 for four people in a taxi.

Excellent museum

A great museum well set out, very informative. Theres a short film, in English or Korean. Then a self directed tour of museum. Exhibits are well laid out with English translations. I would love to have had a translation of the interviews with the Haenyeo "women of the sea". There is also a Haenyeo trail from the museum, taking in some of the traditional places the women divers used including the Bulteoks. You would need quite a lot of time to do both museum, park, and trail.

Very interesting and informative museum

The musueum is dedicated to the Haenyeo - female divers who traditionally fish for molluscs and octopuses etc. without using oxygen masks. UNESCO has declared the Haenyeo part of humankind’s intangible cultural heritage. We visited the museum shortly after having seen a group of Haenyeo sing their traditional song before heading out into the sea to fish. Having just witnessed the women fist hand added an extra element of interest. The museum is well set out, informative and interesting. Its models, life stories of individuals and displays of clothes and tools really bring home how tough the life of the Haenyeo was in the past (and it’s not easy today). There is also a short movie explaining the history and traditions of the Haenyeo. Well worth a visit!

Museum explains Haenyeo culture

We visited here as part of a ships tour. The 8 minute film was very interesting. There are three exhibit halls. The first two were the best. You can see the whole thing in less than an hour. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here

Went as part of a tour

Good for an afternoon, you can learn lots about the women and how they shaped/ built Jeju. There are dioramas, videos, clothing throughout the history. I learnt a lot. Worth a view if you are in the area.
